In 1981, seven engineers pooled their resources to start a company specialising in vehicle adaptations and mobility. That company is Steering Developments — and we're still going strong.

Seven engineers, one idea.

Steering Developments Ltd started when seven engineers pooled their money, tools and know-how to build vehicle adaptations properly. Four decades later, we're still at it.

Hand controls, joysticks and a lot of trial and error.

Our original joystick steering systems and hand controls looked nothing like today's kit — but the thinking was the same: if a driver can't use a standard car, we'll build something that fits them.

Growing the family

Bringing more expertise in-house.

Over the years we brought other companies under the SDL umbrella — including Feeny and Johnson — so we could develop our own products and turn new ideas into real, fitted solutions.

One of our proudest days: a royal tour of the old workshop, with cars at every stage of adaptation and our demonstrator vehicles, lifts and wheelchairs lined up outside.
