In 1981, seven engineers pooled their resources to start a company specialising in vehicle adaptations and mobility. That company is Steering Developments — and we're still going strong.

Steering Developments Ltd started when seven engineers pooled their money, tools and know-how to build vehicle adaptations properly. Four decades later, we're still at it.

Our original joystick steering systems and hand controls looked nothing like today's kit — but the thinking was the same: if a driver can't use a standard car, we'll build something that fits them.

Over the years we brought other companies under the SDL umbrella — including Feeny and Johnson — so we could develop our own products and turn new ideas into real, fitted solutions.

One of our proudest days: a royal tour of the old workshop, with cars at every stage of adaptation and our demonstrator vehicles, lifts and wheelchairs lined up outside.

We only partner with people who match our standards — Yamaha for powered wheelchair drive systems, and Joysteer for the latest in hand control technology.

We're ISO 9001 certified, Motability approved, and we work on all types of vehicles in the UK and overseas. And our SD Motion range keeps manual and powered wheelchair users moving.
We're still designing, still building, still answering the phone ourselves. Come and meet the team — or book a free demo to try SD Motion for yourself.
